Ama la vida! Love life! I truly love my life and I loved traveling trough Ecuador. This country fascinated me from day one on and I am stilled stoked about the diversity of this unique country. You want to surf and party hard? Hike some of the highest mountains and see unique wildlife? Then Ecuador is definitely the place you want to spend your next holidays.
Spending one month in Ecuador, I was lucky to meet many locals, who showed me their country. Here, you will find the 7 things which made me love Ecuador so much:

1. SURFING AND LEARNING SPANISH IN MONTAÑITA
Staying with a local family, enjoying learning Spanish, taking surf lessons at the Montañita Spanish School and much more awaits you in this little surf and party town. Here you can read the 7 things to do in Montañita besides drinking 😉

2. ISLA DE LA PLATA – THE POOR MAN’S GALAPAGOS
No money for the Galapagos? No problem. Isla de la Plata is a very good and cheap alternative for about $50. On the way we saw whales breaching and waving their pectoral fins. Wow, that was stunning! On the island, we observed blue footed boobies and frigatebirds. Afterwards we met some big turtles and had the chance to go snorkeling. What a perfect day trip!
3. QUITO – THE CAPITAL
Quito is a big city with about 2.6 million inhabitants. One of my best friends from university has been living here for a year and was able to show me the best vegetarian restaurants, the best tattoo parlor, the best places to party – and much, much more. It was so much fun to explore the city with local eyes. Muchas Gracias Exploringclaudi! You want to be close to locals? Make sure you stay at the Community Hostel. The staff is always happy to help and likes to party 😉

4. BAÑOS – THE ADVENTURE PLACE
You want to go beyond your comfort zone and get some adrenalin kicks? Then Baños should definitely be on your list. Biking, hiking, bungee jumping, river rafting, zip lining, swings and much more await you there. Go and get your dose of adrenalin!

5. EATING FONDUE AND CHOCOLATE
Being Swiss, I love cheese. And guess what?! In Salinas we found Fondue, the Swiss dish with melted cheese and bread. Mmmhh that was delicious. This little town is famous for its cheese and chocolate factory. And believe me, both were delicious. However, it is hard to beat the taste of Swiss cheese and chocolate.
By the way, when you drive from Baños to Salinas you can see Chimborazo. With 6263 meters above sea level it is the highest mountain in Ecuador. And as its location along the equatorial bulge makes its summit the farest point on the Earth’s surface from the Earth’s center. A real beauty.
6. BATHING FEET IN THE QUILOTOA CRATER LAKE
The Quilotoa crater lake is a day trip away from Quito. The highest point of the crater is about 3915 meters above sea level. The lake itself is on 3,500 meters above sea level. Its nice to walk down and enjoy the mind-blowing view. Take a break at the bottom. Bath your feet or canoe around. Do not underestimate the trek up. There are also mauls and horses available that bring you back up.

7. A TRIP TO THE AMAZON
Discovering wildlife, learning new things, and meeting Indigenous people – that was my experience in the Amazon. It is an opportunity you do not want to miss in Ecuador. Read more about my 4-days-trip to the Amazon.

There is much more this country has to offer. So plan enough time and plan wise. One day I will come back and do the things I did not do on my first trip such as visiting the Galapagos, climbing up Chimborazo or Cotopaxi or spending time in Cuenca. I am already very much looking forward to it!
